watercolor play

A new medium for me or so it seems as I haven't painted anything in many years, these the first experiments in the new watercolor moleskeine given to me by a master of the medium (thanks Hoss!), the top page of friends while at work, the bottom from memories of New York I wasn't able to sketch from life, my favorite of a teeny little dog we saw coming up the sidewalk on a cold blustery day, his eyes nearly scrunched shut from the force of the wind, head held high in determination as he mightily fought for each step forward, ha! Ronda and I looked at each other when we saw him and cheered, go dog go!added 5/25: thanks all your comments and encouragement, we'll see how this goes, as I said long time since I've painted, wow, not since 1986 as I recall!

eating in New York

Sarabeth's at The Whitney, brunch with Ronda at "Telepan" (the House Smoked Brook Trout potato-chive blini and sweet onion sour cream, yum! and for dessert, Buttermilk Panna Cotta with rhubarb sorbet, rhubarb soup and sesame seed tuile, one of the most refreshing desserts I've ever eaten, dancing in my mouth yum!) and John's Pizzeria Times Square.p.s. I'll eventually have photos to better see the sculpture I tried to draw outside the window of Sarabeth's (top sketch) It was a metal framework strung with protest and other sorts of banners.
also, many many thanks for all your comments to my travel sketches and apologies once again for my unresponsiveness, I'm still feeling really worn out and sleeping bunches instead.

statues holding stuff

and even the lady looking at statues holding something too, for once I wish I had a camera when I saw them together! Just a few more travel sketches to go, these are sketches from two of the museums I visited, the top is "The American Folk Art Museum" where I saw "Concrete Kingdon: Sculptures by Nek Chand" and the bottom is a corner of the hotel room in Boston and the Fernando Botero sculpture "Venus" that greets you at the bottom of the escalator in the "Museum of Fine Arts, Boston" where I went to see "David Hockney, Portraits"

Elvis Costello at BAM

last Friday, May 12th, at The Brooklyn Academy of Music, wished I'd had more time to draw the building, it was beautiful! The best I could do was my favorite one of the angels surrounding the door, this fellow looked to be belting out a song for all he was worth!

travel sketches continued

hi everyone, a few more travel sketches, the first of fellow passengers on the train from Boston to New York, the second and third kinda more of the same as yesterday's post though from a different viewpoint, another pre-concert lecture at Lincoln Center, and another concert there, this my view of Yo-Yo Ma and Colin Jacobson.

travel sketchbook

Hi friends who visit here, I'm back from my trip to Boston and New York! I had an unbelievably wonderful time because of my good friend Ronda who planned it all, 7 museums (Boston Museum of Fine Art, Frick Collection, MoMA, American Folk Art Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum, Asia Society) 5 concerts (Yo-Yo Ma x3, Chris Thile, Elvis Costello) 1.5 plays (half of Tarzan, we left, it was that bad and Faith Healer), much good food (Telepan and Azure) 1 garden (Brooklyn Botanic Gardens), seeing two friends (Hi Maryann and Amanda, great to meet you Dede!) plus a bit of shopping in between. Phew, I'm exhausted! Some pages from my travel sketchbook, the hotel room in Boston, a pre-concert talk on John Adams at Lincoln Center, and a sketch of the symphony as they played "Naive and Sentimental Music" by John Adams, I loved it!
added 5/17: Hi all, many thanks for all the welcome backs! Still in recovery from this trip, I may have overdone just a bit! Please forgive if my responses will be slow in coming, trying to catch up on what sleep I missed, 'night all!

leaving with links
Hi friends! I am off to New York and Boston on Monday so this will be the last post from me untill after the 14th. I have a few links to share that you might enjoy, - "Drawger" is a group of professional illustrators, (many of my favorites!) who have gathered together to share a blog/website. In the column on the right you'll see a link "who's here" to see who's there :)
- Sterling Hundley, an incredible talented illustrator has a news section on his website that is like a blog and there he shares the process for creating his beautiful work (he graduated from my alma mater too)
- David Levine, the New York Review of Books has created a wonderful archive of this great illustrator's caricature/portraits, scroll down to find his work listed by year or category
- Frank Lobdell, wonderful figure drawings, I've just recently discovered this artist because of my figure drawing group.
- also the figure drawings of Richard Diebenkorn, and certainly wouldn't mind seeing the exhibit of "Master Drawings by Bay Area Figuratives" at the Crocker Museum in Sacramento
