The Mandrill
This is an old painting, something I did many years ago as an assignment in art school. I'm posting it because 1. like Laura, I've been trying to draw animals this month but the trip to the zoo I'd planned for that purpose was cancelled and 2. it was used to illustrate a poem and it's filling in while I work on a new illustration to submit to Sparky's "Illustrated Poem Marathon". The first few lines of the poem "The Mandrill" areIn the Mandrill.

sculpture of Leslie Garland Bolling

a few sketches from the exhibit of wood carvings by Leslie Garland Bollings now showing at The Library of Virginia, I wish I could have captured the wonderful patina of the wood, the delicacy and detail of his work, they were beautiful!

too quick!!
went to Maymont's Children's Barn to join Laura in drawing animals this month but when I arrived the goats were dashing, jumping, chasing, racing, and generally tearing all about with glee, just one cooperative fellow had settled himself comfortably and stayed still (though just briefly!), catching some rays with his head tilted towards the sun. I attemped again the carriage horse but she too was gone when customers arrived, so just these few scribbles, practice at least for Thursday when I'll head for the zoo!

angry animals and a pirate
Trying to join Laura in drawing animals this month these are the only ones I've had a chance to sketch, they are statues that are part of the exhibit on Henri Rousseau at the National Gallery, they were included in the show because they are thought to be a source of reference for his jungle paintings.
and this is the beginning of an illustration, the treasure revealed tomorrow!

sketching a sketcher
I always wondered that I'd never come across anybody else sketching their "everyday", finally I have! I was inside the cafe, she was outside sketching the buildings across the street, she left suddenly and I didn't get a chance to say hello, now I wonder is there a sketch of me sketching in someone's sketchbook?click image for larger view
added 8/12: thanks everyone for your comments, if I ever do meet her I'll be sure to let you know :)

reserved for blind contour first friday
I've been bad. :( This is not a blind contour drawing. See the title of this post? There should be a blind contour drawing here. I drew this instead. This is what I saw when I went downtown and had to take refuge in a store's entryway when it started suddenly to rain. I guess I could have blind contoured it but it didn't fit the theme so I didn't. So I don't have a blind contour for today, I have this. Tomorrow I'll do my blind contour drawing as I should have today. Tomorrow I'll be good! :)Until then, really good blind contour first friday entries can be found at "Inkfinger"!

day at the duck race

I sat for a bit under the canopy at the Big Brothers Big Sisters tent when at the Duck Race this weekend and drew as I watched the lady manning the booth apply temporary tattoos of their logo on the arms of kids who stopped by, my drawings were too scribbly to tell what was going on so I used them to recreate the scene in the top drawing.
